Expanding AI Horizons: Google Opens Access to Generative AI Capabilities in Search

After previewing them during its I/O event two weeks ago, Google said yesterday that it is beginning to make new generative AI capabilities in Search available to users. The technology behemoth is granting users access to Search Labs. This brand-new platform enables anyone to sign up for experiments like the Search Generative Experience and try them out ahead of time.

You will get an email when you can begin testing the new generative AI features in Search if you signed up for Search Labs. By hitting the Labs symbol in the most recent Google app (Android and iOS) or on Chrome desktop, you may join up if you haven’t already.

Once you’re in the trial, Google claims the new generative AI-powered Search experience will make it easier for you to learn subjects and complete tasks.

Google claims that with this new upgrade, consumers may quickly catch up on a novel or challenging subject. Let’s say you want to learn more about a subject that you would typically need to research separately. In order to assist you in understanding what criteria to take into account when you enter a query, such as “learning ukulele vs guitar,” search will now offer an AI-powered snapshot.

Quick answers to particular queries can also be found via the Search Generative Experience. If you search for topics like “How to get an old coffee stain out of a wool jumper” or “How can I renew my passport quickly,” for instance, you will be able to get suggestions for the important information you need to know or see a choice of solutions accessible and take the next step with assistance from the web.

Additionally, the new search interface incorporates shopping. According to Google, you can look up terms like “Peel and stick wallpaper for kitchen” to find out essential details like whether it can be easily removed and to receive a list of possibilities that includes pricing, user reviews, and links to buy.

If you want to delve deeper, you can choose “ask a follow-up question” or “select a suggested next step,” which will put you in conversational mode and allow you to enquire further about the subject you’re investigating with Google. There will be cross-referencing of context among questions.

“This experiment is our first step in adding generative AI to Search, and we’ll be making many updates and improvements over time,” Google stated in a blog post. We’re happy for you to test out these new features and offer feedback along the way as we continue to rethink how we can make it even more natural and easy to discover what you’re searching for.
