Microsoft AI-Powered Website Building: Empowering Effortless Website Development

Microsoft introduces AI technology to make website development easier.

Copilot, an AI-powered assistant for Microsoft’s Power Pages low-code business website building tool, has officially gone live for U.S. users on Tuesday. Copilot can produce and change images and site design themes in addition to text, forms, chatbots, and web page layouts when given instructions.

Users can, for instance, define the type of form they need to construct, and Copilot will build it and automatically establish the required back-end database tables. Then, within Copilot, the tables may be modified, expanded upon, or eliminated using natural language.

Sangya Singh, Microsoft’s Vice President of Power Pages, said to TechCrunch via email: “As the maker, you describe what you need in natural language and use Copilot suggestions to design web pages, create content, and build complex business data forms for your website.” “You don’t have to start from scratch anymore.”

Not in this day and age, at least, but creating a website using AI isn’t exactly a revolutionary concept. While generators like Mixo can produce straightforward splash pages when given a brief description, tools like Jasper can handle content, pictures, layouts, and more.

Singh emphasizes that Copilot in Power Pages is not a technology that could or should be used to create entire spam sites, but rather that it is more adaptable than the other options now available.

Power Pages now make it possible to transition smoothly from no code (natural language site descriptions) to low code (changing website designs and layouts using the design studio) to pro code (creating intricate customizations using well-known web frameworks). “Creating Copilot experiences within Power Pages is revolutionary for Power Pages because it is the first time an AI assistant can create business data-centric websites using natural language.”

Adding generative AI to the mix might be problematic, of course, depending on the domain and use case. AI can be instructed to produce harmful stuff, even if it wasn’t the original intention. And if it isn’t carefully controlled, it may go off the tracks.

However, Singh asserts that Copilot in Power Pages, which uses OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 model, contains “guardrails” to guard against such problems.

Singh explained that before returning ideas to the website creator, “we take the user prompts from the website maker to the Copilot, get suggestions from the large language model, and do a lot of processing, like offensive content filtering.” “In our experience, makers can easily report the AI-generated output via a thumbs-down gesture and provide additional feedback if Copilot’s suggestions are irrelevant or inappropriate.”

What about the GPT-3.5-powered chatbot that was previously discussed and that Power Pages customers may now include on their websites? Singh claims that it is similarly protected, with a whitelist of URLs that it will search through to get answers.

Power Pages Copilot is an ‘AI helper’ to a human website creator, thus the name Copilot, where the maker may ask for advice on how to develop various components of a business data-centric site. This is important to keep in mind, she continued. Giving the producers “total control” means that they are always in charge of deciding whether to use the Copilot idea, improve it, or ignore it.
